The History of the DEVOS Family

Rich and Helen DeVos grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, during the Great Depression. Rich, the son of Dutch immigrants, and Helen both attended Calvin College. They married in 1953 and raised four children: Dick, Dan, Cheri and Doug. Lifelong Michigan residents, Rich and Helen co-founded Amway with Jay and Betty Van Andel, a company that became the world’s leading direct-selling business.

The DEVOS Family Today

Rich and Helen DeVos’ legacy continues through their children — Dick and Betsy, Dan and Pamella, Cheri, and Doug and Maria — as well as their many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The DeVos Family remains deeply invested in Grand Rapids, Orlando and communities worldwide through a broad range of business and philanthropic efforts. While each Family member pursues individual passions and ventures, they also collectively serve as caretakers of the Orlando Magic NBA team, owners of OA Private Capital and co-owners of Amway. Together they support the DeVos Family Foundation, the DeVos Urban Leadership Initiative (DVULI) and Spring GR. Family members hold leadership and advisory roles at RDV, the Family’s collective professional office, and many other organizations.

The Family has been the caretakers of the Orlando Magic (NBA) since Rich and Helen DeVos acquired the team in 1991. In 1959, Rich DeVos and Jay Van Andel founded Amway, launching the DeVos Family’s global business presence. What started in their basements grew into the world’s leading direct-selling company. Built on the belief that business ownership empowers individuals, Amway laid the foundation for the DeVos Family’s involvement across diverse industries and initiatives.

The second generation has business ventures reflecting their individual interests, including The Windquest Group, DP Fox Ventures, Baton Collective and Continuum.

The DeVos Family includes more than 30 adults who share a deep commitment to faith, family, stewardship and discovery. United by shared values, they actively engage in business, philanthropy, community involvement and public policy. The DeVos Family’s tradition of giving was modeled by Rich and Helen DeVos and continues to shape its philanthropic work today. The Richard and Helen DeVos Foundation sunset in 2024 after 54 years, having awarded more than $1.1 billion in grants to over 1,000 nonprofit organizations. Their commitment to stewardship lives on through the DeVos Family Foundation, which supports initiatives that strengthen communities, empower individuals and drive meaningful change. Individual Family members and couples also lead their own philanthropic work through personal foundations and charitable initiatives.
